How to compare your company with competitors fairly

Compare competitors through relevant criteria, current verified information, and equivalent offer conditions. Show where an alternative may fit better and distinguish an unknown from a weakness. Review material comparative claims before publication rather than rely on a caricature of the other company.

Source credibility is the extent to which an audience regards a message’s source as able and willing to provide accurate information about the claim being made. This definition follows APA Dictionary of Psychology: source credibility (American Psychological Association (2018), defining publisher entry; no single inventor claimed). Fame concerns recognition rather than relevant expertise or trustworthiness. In the comparison table, check the source and the assertion separately; a confident company voice does not establish the competitor claim it publishes.

A private moment that makes the issue visible

Composite scenario, not a client case: You compare a household purchase and notice that one table gives every advantage to its publisher. At work, your team has created a similar page from remembered objections. Nobody has opened the current competitor materials or checked whether the packages are comparable.

State the decision before discussing personalities

The decision is what a buyer can learn from the comparison. A credible comparison needs evidence relevant to each claim, not merely confidence in the author’s own company.

Proposed method: verified competitor-comparison table

  1. Choose buyer-relevant criteria. Use actual needs and material commitments. Avoid criteria invented only because your offer would win them. Ask whether the criterion would matter if your offer did not appear in the table. Connect it to a buyer task or obligation. Remove a category whose only purpose is to award your company an easy advantage.

  2. Define equivalent scope. Compare the same use conditions and responsibilities. Explain a meaningful difference rather than hide it in a footnote. Record differences in package, period, and buyer responsibility before comparing. A narrower service may still fit some buyers. Do not treat a preferred delivery model as the definition of quality itself.

  3. Open current evidence. Record the source and date for each material statement. Mark unavailable information as unknown. Keep the supporting passage and date with the claim. Mark a missing public detail as unknown. Do not infer absence from the fact that a short competitor page does not discuss the capability.

  4. Review the complete impression. Check headings, symbols, and ordering alongside literal claims. Obtain appropriate legal review for comparative advertising. Ask a reviewer to explain what the symbols imply. Put a material qualification where it changes the reading. A footnote should not reverse a categorical message the main comparison delivers.

  5. Assign maintenance and correction. Name the owner and update triggers. Correct a claim when the competitor or your own offer changes. Track controlled copies as well as the web page. Give reported errors an accountable destination. When a source changes, revise the current claim instead of defending it solely through an older screenshot.

Build the table from a comparison record

Create a private working record before designing the public table. Give each row a buyer question, your current claim, the alternative’s current claim, and the source supporting each. Add the date checked and any unresolved condition. Keep the record distinct from the public presentation. The designer should not need to infer a negative claim from an empty source cell, and the reviewer should be able to trace a disputed statement without reconstructing the research.

For a hypothetical implementation comparison, the row might ask who supplies migration work. One offer could include a defined service while another requires a separate arrangement. Establish those facts from current sources before choosing a check mark or description. The useful difference is the allocation of work, not a general claim that one supplier cares more about the customer. Do not supply fictional prices or product details to make the example look like a real market comparison.

Make unknown and unavailable mean different things

Use a clear status when the team could not verify a detail. An unknown is not evidence of absence. An unavailable option is a supported finding about the particular package or conditions checked. If the public format cannot carry that distinction, narrow the comparison or remove the row. A table that requires misleading compression is not rescued by a private research file containing the qualification.

APA describes source credibility through perceived expertise and trustworthiness. That does not make the publisher of a favorable comparison correct by definition. Evaluate the evidence behind each assertion and disclose the comparison’s publisher clearly. Do not style a company-authored recommendation as an independent rating. Have the appropriate legal reviewer inspect the final comparative claim and the impression created by its presentation.

Review the losing column as carefully as your own

Ask a reviewer to read only the alternative’s column and describe what it implies. Then compare that account with the source record. Include the least favorable verified condition in your own offer where it matters to the buyer’s decision. A fair comparison can still support a strong recommendation. It should not require the reader to discover a decisive limitation only after entering a sales process.

Nisbett and Wilson’s 1977 review cautions against treating causal explanations of mental processes as direct access to those processes. Its relevance here is limited. Do not infer that a buyer chose the alternative because they misunderstood your brand or were swayed by a superficial cue. Ask which requirement or comparison mattered and preserve that account without pretending it establishes every cause of the decision.

Give corrections a path back into sales material

Name the owner who can evaluate a reported error and update every controlled copy. Include sales decks, downloaded files, and reused screenshots where applicable. A corrected website table can leave an old claim circulating elsewhere. Keep the source date with the version so the team can identify which material needs attention. Do not defend a statement after its basis has changed merely because it was accurate when drafted.

Ryan and Deci distinguish controlled from more personally endorsed action. Their theory does not establish that a comparison table improves purchasing outcomes. Use its autonomy lens narrowly: help the buyer inspect the relevant trade without shaming them for choosing differently. At the next maintenance review, ask whether the table still answers the buyer question used to create it. Retire a flattering row that no longer supports a useful, current distinction.

Put the boundary into words

This comparison uses these criteria and current sources. The offers differ in these conditions, and these points remain unverified. A buyer whose needs differ may reasonably choose the alternative.

Work through a bounded example

Hypothetical application: A company labels a rival as lacking implementation support. Opening the current offer shows support is available under a different package. The revised comparison describes the real scope difference and removes the unsupported negative claim.

Make the criteria defensible before filling the cells

Start with the buyer’s decision rather than the desired winner. Identify the capabilities, obligations, and limits that change suitability. Ask whether the same criteria would remain useful if your company were absent from the table. Remove categories that supply a flattering label without helping a buyer distinguish the work. This is a proposed editorial check, not a validated measure of fairness.

Keep factual comparison separate from preference. You may prefer a particular service model and explain the reason. Do not convert that preference into a claim that another model cannot serve any buyer. A smaller commitment, a different implementation responsibility, or a narrower product can be appropriate under different conditions. Explain the tradeoff rather than define the preferred model as quality itself.

Use the same evidence standard across columns. If your capability rests on an operating record, do not judge a competitor solely by a brief headline. If the comparison uses public materials, make that scope clear and avoid claims requiring private information you do not have. A missing statement is an information gap. It does not establish that the competitor lacks the capability or refuses to provide it.

Inspect the table as a reader experiences it

A check mark can imply an unqualified capability, while a cross can imply complete absence. Where the reality is conditional, write the condition in the cell or close enough to preserve the comparison. Do not let a footnote reverse the main visual message. Ask a relevant reader to explain the apparent difference before assuming the layout communicates the qualification.

Treat price as part of a package. Confirm what is included, what the buyer supplies, and which condition changes the amount. Do not compare a bare entry price with a fully supported offer and call the difference a direct quality premium. If a current competitor price cannot be verified, leave it unresolved or omit that row. Never fill an empty cell with a plausible number.

Give the table an operating owner after publication. Product changes, service changes, and new terms can make yesterday’s accurate statement misleading. Set a review trigger around those changes, and provide a correction route for a buyer or competitor who identifies an error. A dated source record lets the team reconstruct why a claim was made without defending it after its basis changes.

Before release, ask which verified fact is least favorable to your position and whether the comparison presents it clearly. An honest comparison can still recommend your offer strongly. Its credibility depends on the buyer being able to inspect the same relevant conditions the company used to reach that recommendation.

Check the failure mode before scaling

Do not invent competitor weaknesses or imply a missing public detail proves absence. Avoid fake independent rankings, testimonials, or financial results. Use counsel for actual regulated or comparative claims.

Review the work, then revise the arrangement

Review current source support and equivalence before relying on the table in a sale. Preserve the date and correct misleading inferences as well as errors.
